Bike To Work

 Swim Team...

First, I rode 3 times last week (tue 5/29, wed 5/30 and Fri 6/1). I also rode the prior Friday and a weekend group ride (~30 miles).

I've got the swim team thing going. I've started a web site that is going to make inexpensive websites available to summer league swim teams Check it out at www.swim-team.us.

Rode this morning too!

 Log Entry...

No time to post, but I need to log last week's rides:

5/7 Monday: ride to work round-trip
5/8 Tuesday: ran 4 miles
5/9 Wednesday: ride to work round-trip
5/10 Thursday: ran 4 m

Biked in this morning. Beautiful mid-60s and sunny with a fairly stiff breeze. Felt great - could feel that I'd had a few days off!

 Smell the...

Honeysuckle?

One of the great things about riding your bike to work is being able to enjoy sights, sounds and smells that you would never see driving your car on a freeway in traffic. I've said before how interaction with people is one of the great joys of riding through neighborhoods on my way home from work.

Certainly, one of the drawbacks is the smell of gas fumes, exhaust from traffic that I am surrounded by at times. Typically, the smells I encounter are either exhaust or my stinky, sweaty helmet. Ughh. But this morning, as I rounded the corner on an access road along Interstate 285, the smell - wonderful, sweet smell - of honeysuckle filled the air. It was heavenly. Thoughts of riding my bike - my only transportation - as a kid on those summer days as a teen going to the pool or the shopping center or a friend's house came to mind.

Why don't I ride every day? (note to self, I rode 3 days this week: M, W, F)

 Therapy...

Riding my bike to and from work is in many ways therapeutic. Instead of a grueling and often frustrating 35 to 45 minutes in slow-and-go traffic with long lights and rude drivers, a bike ride through quiet neighborhoods (in part) with people in their yards waving hello is nothing short of uplifting.

I rode yesterday (4/30) in beautiful Spring weather!

 25lbs of Carbon Saved!!

So I did a little research and found that a gallon of gas expended to drive a car releases about 25 pounds of CO2. As it happens, I need about a gallon of gas for my round trip commute when I drive.

Then I learned that the value of a carbon offset ranges from $1 to $30 per ton of CO2. So, with a little math, I figured  - at the high end - that each of my bike commuting trips should net me about $0.375. So, if I ride every work day in a month (approx 20), that should get me $7.50 per month.

Anyone want to buy some carbon offsets?

Yes, I rode today!
